The Raiders go defense for the first time since Madden
Around the NFL on Tuesday, the Oakland Raiders hired Bronco DC Dennis Allen as their new head coach. Allen, Winston Moss, and Eagle OC Marty Morhinweg were considered frontrunners with Allen emerging from the interview process. Allen is the first defensive minded coach hired by the Raiders since John Madden. This shows that new Oakland CEO Mark Davis is willing to deviate somewhat from the road followed by his father for decades.
Only the Colts and Bucs remain without head coaches and both positions are expected to be filled by the end of the week. Ex-Packer and Texas A&M front man Mike Sherman looks to be the frontrunner in Tampa Bay. Sherman is the only one of the original candidates (Sherman, Marty Schottenheimer, Wade Phillips, Brad Childress, Mike Zimmer and Rob Chudzinski) to be called back for a second interview after the Chip Kelly fiasco.
After two interviews, it looks like former Ohio State coach Jim Tressel has fallen out of favor with Colts. Indianapolis is bringing in the Raven DC Chuck Pagano to talk and 49er special teams coach Brad Seely is reportedly also on the radar. Both men are considered top prospects as head coaches by football people around the league. Colt owner Jim Irsay reportedly wants a solid assistant coach to come in and rebuild the franchise completely.
There will be football on Sunday as top draft hopefuls strap it up in the Senior Bowl. It will be meat on the hoof for NFL GMs and careers have been made and lost in this game.
Joe Paterno will buried today in a private ceremony for family only. Several hundered people started queing up for the second day of viewing on Wednesday which commenced at the 7:40 AM. Near the library, students posted notes on a cardboard cutout of Paterno’s likeness.

(CBB) BYU +2.5 over Virginia Tech
Not entirely sure why the Hokies are favored in this game. The Hokies are 7-9 ATS for the year, 2-4 at home, 4-6 as a favorite, and 1-5 in their L5. BYU hasn’t suffered any post Jimmer hangover at 17-5 and has made an easy transition into the WCC. The Coogs are 0-3 as a dog but that was to much better than what they face here. Techs really don’t apply to be BYU here because for some reason this is a very public team with a bunch of wins by 13-15 when they’re laying 18-20. The visitors have Gonzaga and the revenge match with St Mary’s on deck but this game is important to the resume when it comes to an at large bid.

(CBB) Temple -2.5 over Charlotte
The Owls might be looking for a second wind after a tough tough non-conference schedules and then going through the rigors of a tough and underrated A-14 schedule. Lets remember that this team did beat Duke and is tough to beat when hitting on all cylinders. The 49ers are 1-3 in their L4 with the win coming vs Kennesaw State and off B2B home losses to St Louis and George Washington. Temple is 3-1 SU and ATS in their L4 and in a good sport to get 1-3 series monkey off their back with a win here. Temple by ten.

(NBA) Utah -10.5 over Toronto
The Raptor play their third game in four nights and come off a rare road win at Phoenix last night with Bargnani returning to the fold. That snapped an eight game losing streak for the Barneys. The Jazz have had the last three nights off and have been bears at the Energy Solutions Arena where they are 8-2 against the points and 6-2 as fave. Further, Utah is 4-0 ATS vs the Eastern Conference an 3-0 playing losing records.Toronto just doesn’t have post play to deal with the Jazz. Utah big.

(NBA) Portland +3.5 over Golden State
BOTN has scoured the injury reports and found nothing so it came as a big surprize to see the Blazers as dogs in this matchup. Granted, the Warriors have given the Blazers fits going 5-3 SU and 7-1 ATS in the last eight including 3-1 and 4-0 here. That said, the Warriors are just 2-5 SU and ATS in their L5 and just 3-6 SU and ATS at home. Portland’s road numbers aren’t much better but the Blazers have had a murderous top heavy Best in the West schedule to this point and they figure to get much healthier against this kind. Golden State plays hard for Mark Jackson but in the end, Portland wins straight up here.
